The 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series is a high-performance, limited-production coupe that represents the pinnacle of AMG engineering during its era. Built in a run of only 350 units worldwide, it takes the already powerful SL65 AMG and transforms it into a track-focused monster. Under the hood lies a hand-built 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged V12 engine, pushing out 661 horsepower and 1,000 Nm (738 lb-ft) of torque—though torque is electronically limited to preserve the drivetrain. This immense power is channeled through a reinforced 5-speed AMG Speed shift automatic transmission to the rear wheels, launching the car from 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in just 3.8 seconds, with a top speed electronically limited to 320 km/h (199 mph).
To complement the power increase, AMG reworked nearly every aspect of the car: the retractable hardtop of the standard SL was replaced with a fixed carbon fiber roof to reduce weight and lower the center of gravity. Carbon fiber is extensively used throughout the body, including the front splitter, hood, fenders, rear diffuser, and the integrated retractable rear spoiler. The wide-body design not only gives it a menacing stance but also allows for a wider track and improved handling, aided by an adjustable coil over suspension system developed specifically for this model. The Black Series sits on lightweight AMG forged wheels—19-inch up front and 20-inch at the rear—wrapped in ultra-high-performance tires.
Inside, the SL65 Black Series features a stripped-back, motorsport-inspired interior with carbon fiber trim, Alcantara surfaces, and heavily bolstered sport seats. Luxuries like the COMAND infotainment system and automatic climate control remain, but rear seats are eliminated in favor of a structural cross-brace, emphasizing its focus on performance. As a result of its rarity, extreme performance, and distinctive styling, the SL65 AMG Black Series has become a highly sought-after collector’s item and remains one of the most dramatic and desirable models ever to bear the AMG badge.
